"Olive growers from Split-Dalmatia County achieved a 100% success rate at the prestigious New York competition, winning 17 gold and 8 silver medals."
Croatian olive growing has once again confirmed its world-class status on the international stage. At the prestigious 2026 New York International Olive Oil Competition, olive growers from Split-Dalmatia County achieved a brilliant success with 25 medals from 25 entries, representing a rare 100% success rate. Competing against the world's best, Dalmatian producers proved that traditional methods and dedication yield exceptional quality.
Global Recognition and Local Tradition
Overall, Croatian producers submitted 144 olive oil samples to the competition, winning an impressive 103 gold and 25 silver medals, resulting in an overall success rate of 89%. County head Blaženko Boban hosted the awarded growers and emphasized the importance of branding and protecting traditional Dalmatian olive oil. He also highlighted ongoing county initiatives to plant Mediterranean fruit and olive trees in fire-damaged areas, supporting both local agriculture and sustainable tourism.
Market Challenges and Gastronomic Tourism
Despite international accolades, local producers face market challenges, including competition from cheaper oils of questionable quality and the need for better farmland irrigation. Ivica Ljubenkov from the Croatian Olive Growers Association noted that manual harvesting accounts for a large portion of production costs. However, with improved marketing, premium Dalmatian olive oil remains an essential driver of Croatia's growing culinary tourism.
