"Research by the Croatian Rural Tourism Association reveals that local food and nature attract visitors, yet agritourism still suffers from a lack of market visibility."
Croatian agritourism continues to draw visitors primarily through authentic culinary offers and pristine nature, yet the sector's full potential remains underutilized. According to preliminary research presented by the Croatian Rural Tourism Association (URTH), as many as four-fifths of guests visit rural estates specifically for homemade food, local beverages, and the warm hospitality of their hosts.
Visibility Challenges and Market Perception
Although nearly nine out of ten respondents have visited an agritourism farm, only a quarter believe the sector holds the position it deserves within Croatian tourism. The main obstacles to further growth stem from insufficient public awareness of available offers and poor integration into the broader tourism system. This highlights an urgent need for better promotion of rural regions that offer far more than a standard vacation.
The Economic Power of Day Trips
A particularly interesting finding from the study is that over four-fifths of visitors are day-trippers without overnight stays, most frequently arriving as families. This visitor structure proves that agritourism cannot be viewed solely through the lens of accommodation capacities. Its true value lies in daily spending, direct sales of agricultural goods, and the creation of authentic experiences that connect travelers with local producers.
